Golden Spider Silk

If you find yourself in London before 5 June 2012 with an hour to spare and are prepared to be amazed, then consider heading to the V&A for the Golden Spider Silk exhibition.

This tiny exhibition in Room 17a certainly took my breath away. I came back with the exhibition catalogue which I cannot share here because it would breach copyright.

The display showcases the world’s largest pieces of cloth made from spider silk. It includes a brocaded shawl made from the silk of more than one million female golden orb-weaver spiders collected in the highlands of Madagascar, as well as a cape on public display for the first time. The display also features background material and a short film revealing the process.

If you would like to order the exhibition catalogue, try here.

  1. How fascinating, thank you so much for posting this. The color is so beautiful, and all the more magical that it has not been enhanced. And the hand embroidery is so lovely. I wish I were close enough to pop in to see the exhibit!

  2. Dear NiniKnows, glad you enjoyed this post rather than being freaked out by spiders. The exhibition was also on show in New York and Chicago(?) in previous years, maybe you get a chance to see it later in the year.
