Mixing styles & patterns ... Torana

What a washout this June proves to be. The few days when it is fine and dry, I am working on site up to 10 hours. On rainy days like today I am trying to not stress over work that just cannot be done. There is now not only a backlog for existing clients but a waiting list for new ones.

It is also not much weather for wearing silks as rain and printed silk just don't get on. Today is an exception: a day dedicated to researching pond plants (an area I am woefully short of expertise), stocking up on varying supplies and border plans to complete.

In order to cheer myself I was raiding the scarf drawers for a suitable gavroche to wear with a patterned top: Torana was my lucky find!

You just have to love the stylized depictions of peacocks and elephants.

The design of this gavroche reminds me of a checkerboard: squares of highly coloured and near monochrome scenes, all of them depicting a focal points of a ceremonial gate, erected for annual celebrations in parts of India.

I chose this gavroche because it works with the patterned top. The pale yellow background combines with the pales shades of green in the top.

The circular corner detail in the gavroche echoes aspects of the pattern of the top.

Although for many years green and blue should not be seen together, recent styling is much more forgiving and I am quite happy to wear the dark blue border with the pale greens of the top.

Are you breaking with conventional wisdom, too?

  2. What a delicious top , and as you've explained there's a real symbiosis between it and the pretty gavroche : each gaining something from the other.
I wore my Perspectives gavroche in petrol , white and rust as a hairband with an emerald green and grey striped top today . Sounds terrible but it worked somehow !

Glad you're back and posting XO

    1. Gavroches make wonderful hairband and are very you. At this rate weatherwise, there may be more silk posts coming... not sure whether this is a good thing or not.

    1. Thank you, Jeanne. Other diversions include perusing autumn bulb catalogues, drinking pots of tea and eating home made scones. Anything but dusting!

  4. Good luck with the water gardening plants. I've installed many water gardens over the years and love them. The sound and movement they bring to a garden is wonderful. If you break down your plant selection into surface, marginal and submersilble plants it may make your job easier. Be careful with water lilies, some grow very large and can take over a small pond. Your silk is very pretty.

  5. Thank you Garden Guy. The pond in question is tiny which made the selection so hard. Have gone for a grass, some microphyllums for aeration and a dwarf waterlily.

  6. Very nice pop color scarf ! And it fights the pale colors of your top. Besides, the pattern is so pretty. I am a lover of India for many years, so this design is one of my favorite. I have not the scarf but the enamel bracelets.
