September flowers

As autumn is in the air, on a sunny day I could still be fooled into thinking it is summer.

There is still plenty of colour around. All pictures from the small town garden

Repeat flowering shrub roses are stunning, Rosa 'Alnwick' has been blossoming non stop since June and is still beautiful now.

Sedum spectabile (stonecrop) are perfect for bees and butterflies and ideal for sunny & dry conditions.

Woody hydrangeas will be delight all through the winter; the huge flowerheads are starting to take on hues of green now and will later go brown. I love this on a frosty morning when the leaves have long fallen but the flower heads are still standing proud.

For a splash of crimson red, Knautia mecedonia are hard to beat. They are susceptible to powdery mildew, caused by excessive dryness. If you have been a bit lax re watering, then all is not lost. Cut back the foliage and new growth will be made. This plant self seeds but not to nuisance levels.

  1. Great plant photos, I'm a fan of Autumn Joy sedum and Golden Rod (Salidago) and of course the many varieties of mums this time of year. Then there are the many berry producing trees and shrubs. Watching the seasons change in the garden is wonderful and I'm so lucky to have a career where I'm in the thick of it.

  2. Yes to berries and the joys of working in nature but I cannot follow you on the Salidago; it is terribly invasive here and one of my pet hates. I will never voluntarily plant it. It regularly gets offered to me as a contribution to plant stalls, usually with a bit of ground elder in it and I find it kinder to discreetly bin it than to inflict it on another garden.
